Ukuti Ukuti- A Swahili Children's Songbook

“Ukuti Ukuti” (‘meaning ‘palm leaves’) is the name of a famous traditional children’s song from the Swahili Coast. The book and CD of the same title contains a collection of 58 traditional Swahili children’s songs in total, beautifully illustrated with paintings by Zanzibar children. All songs are transcribed in music notation, the texts are recorded in Swahili and in English, descriptions of activities and comments for parents and teachers accompany the songs and their recordings.

This project grew out of a 2-year training program by the Dhow Countries Music Academy for teachers on how to include music in the classroom environment. The collection, transcriptions, translations, editing and recordings were developed over several years with the help of many individuals from DCMA and other institutions such as TaSuBa, UDSM and the University in Agder, Norway.

The book will be promoted widely for use in schools and in the DCMA outreach program. As the first book of its kind, the Ministries of Education on both Zanzibar and the mainland will find the book of great value in making culturally relevant music education material available to all primary schools in Tanzania. To this end the publishers have already started the process of getting the book evaluated through the official Educational Materials Approval Committees, and it's designation in an appropriate category.
