Arabic Music Theory and Ensemble Play

June 21 - July 13 2002 Instructor: Khaled Jubran (with Habib Hanna, Ibrahim Khatib from Al Urmawi Center, Palestine)

Ten Musicians who were chosen as prospective teachers for DCMA took part in this two-week seminar, which went from 10 am to 4-5 p.m. daily. In the morning all participants studied Arabic Music Theory (solfeggio and maqamat). For most of the participants this was the first time they were taught music in theory and the level of interest and eagerness to learn was amazing. "I feel like my eyes have been opened to new possibilities," said one of the oldest participants, Taimour Rukun. The afternoon was dedicated to instrumental rehearsals and ensemble play. The rehearsals were very dynamic, electrifying and both teachers and students gave their all. On July 11th, the last day of the workshop, all of the participants together with Khaled Jubran got a chance to perform the pieces they had studied at the Old Fort on the Main Stage. This was an appropriate ending for two weeks of very intense and joyful studies.
