For the purpose of contributing to self-sustainability, DCMA runs a CD shop and distribution service, proceeds from which go towards student scholarships, teachers' salaries, stocking our library as well as instruments & furniture repairs. In fact, all teacher's salaries are currently being paid out of DCMA's own funds.
Through the years we've become distributors for renowned World Music companies such as World Music Network, World Circuit, Stern's Music, Putumayo, Topic Records, Ace Records, Wrasse Records and Black Mango amongst others. Over 100 titles are on our order list both at retail and re-seller prices (Tanzania ONLY).
On top of what we distribute, we also stock our own relases (So far Dhow Crossing: A Taarab Voyage and Baladna) highlighting new developments in Zanzibar's traditional music.

The Dhow Crossing CD is a product of a 3-year project between us and Agder University College (Norway) as part of a Norad funded exchange program. Recordings and concerts evolved through exchange visits between us. The result is a new musical landscape that has merged traditional Zanzibari Taarab, Norwegian folk and western popular music - perfectly fused without changing the wonderful laidback character of the music. The record is available for sale at DCMA and other local retailers in Zanzibar and distributed internationally by Kultur & Spetakkel. |
