“We believe that culture is fundamental to the development of a modern society. Culture is magic. Culture has the power to give us experience that can make us fly and fly as one. Therefore we have chosen the name UMOJA Flying Cultural Carpet.
UMOJA is a collaborative cultural program funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Exterior in collaboration with partners from East Africa.
After four vibrant years of experience in the Southern Africa the UMOJA organizers in Norway decided that apart from carrying on with the Southern Carpet it is time to start a second carpet in East Africa, which took off in 2007.
It is a program working for peace and development of the society through international cultural collaboration and exchange for a period at minimums four years time. Working method is the organized network. UMOJA activities focus on organizing regular annual work camps.
The international camp in Nairobi
The international camp this November (10.-23.) is hosted by Sarakasi Trust in Nairobi. About 120 talented youngsters, teachers, administrators and professional artists will camp together for two weeks. There they’ll have the opportunity to develop and promote skills and ideas, to interact and gain cultural understanding and respect, to stimulate cross-over work and to create artistically interesting results. Like with the other camps the artistic outcome will be showcased through performances and exhibitions. There will be six communities that will host the collaborators on the eve of the main performance on the 22nd November: they include Mukuru, Kibera, Mathare, Pumwani, Kayole and Korogocho.
For the first time a group from the Netherlands is also joining the camp.
