Special offers for visitor to Zanzibar

Workshops and seminars offered at DCMA are generally free of charge and are open to the public, unless otherwise specified. It is our aim to provide workshops on a wide range of subjects as an introduction to various instruments, playing techniques, music styles, music-related skills, etc. We welcome input from guest teachers and visitors around the world to share their skills or learn about Zanzibar music, meet musicians and exchange ideas.

Workshops in 2008 included musicians like N’fali Kouyate (Kora), Brazz Brothers from Norway, Women Unite from South Africa (Dance & Voice), Roswitha Dasch and Katharina Muether (Accordion, Violin & Voice) and a story telling / theater workshop with Stephanie Grau (Theater Zeppelin/Germany).

Recent workshops in October 2008 were held with the Norwegian musicians Unni Løvlid, Becaye Aw and Terje Isunget, playing with the DCMA orchestra Safar as well as a Brass workshop with teacher Wolfgang Brandt from the music school Nordhorn/Germany.

To ensure that the musical knowledge and experience is not lost, DCMA has initiated a series of workshops, where veteran musicians from Zanzibar teach their younger colleagues. So far Bi Kidude held a workshop on Unyago, Haji Gora Haji about lyrics and Juma Sheta taught percussion. More are planned for the coming months.

In January local teachers from various nursery and primary schools were invited to a story telling workshop with Moussa Diallo (Mali/Denmark) and in February Musicians from the Comoros, Europe and Zanzibar met for the Swahili Encounter Workshop and presented the results at the Sauti za Busara Festival.

For more information on recent activities please see also Milestones 2007-2009.
